Despite a report Monday that Jay Cutler would return to the Bears' starting lineup this Sunday against the Lions, the quarterback said Tuesday that he's not sure it will happen.

"Can't tell you," Cutler told WMVP-AM 1000, via the Chicago Tribune. "I wish I could say I'd be out there. But the way Josh has been playing, we feel good. ... We've got to be smart."

Cutler suffered a groin injury against the Redskins two weeks ago and the initial diagnosis was that he would miss four weeks. He said he wouldn't know whether he's capable of playing until he resumes practicing, which has yet to happen.

"We haven't done football-specific stuff to tell me where I'm at," Cutler said. "I'm not just going to walk in the building and say: 'Hey, I'm ready to go.'"

Coach Marc Trestman was noncommittal Monday night when asked about Cutler's Week 10 status.

“We're going to go with whatever the doctors say,” he said. “When they approve Jay to play, then Jay will be back in there. We're going to enjoy this one for at least 10 hours before we have to go back and move on to the next one. I will give our players the day off (Tuesday) and we will see where we are come Wednesday.”

Veteran backup Josh McCown completed 22-of-41 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns in Monday night's win over the Packers.
